The Mage:

Mages mages are masters of damage, and more specific area effect damage. These masters of the elements can cover a battle field with constant damage. Their area of effect spells also do things like Root & Snare to help even more. A high level mage with wise talent placement can really put out incredable ammounts of damage. This can be a bad thing though. You will want to be careful and aware of your threat level. Do to much damage to fast and you'll have a very angry monster on you with an angry warrior chewing you out as he tries to save your life. So you must pay attention and be careful. The art of a mage is to know how to keep yourself optimal about damage vs mana cost vs threat. It will take some expirmenting to get it all down.

Mages also get a large number of buffs, most are self buffs however. But they assist the mage in surviving. Without these buffs the mage would be quite weak, but they offer the mage a chance to escape melee combat if needed. Mages also have a nice arsenal of instant damage spells. These are nice when the mob gets to close and you just want to finish it off.

Lastly, mages have the ability to summon food, water and mana stones. Food is consumed outside of combat to regenerate health rapidly, water is consumed outside of combat to regenerate mana rapidly. Mana stones are clickable inventory items that give you an instant boost to your mana and can be used in battle.

Mages are also the only ones in the game with teleports, see the section to the right for more info.


Class Travel: Teleportation

Mages are the only class in the game that gets to teleport around. They can teleport to major cities and forward a short distance. However that teleport forward has a cool down timer on it to prevent you from using it to travel. Its meant to be a "oh @!#* run!" spell. Upon reaching level 20 you unlock several major cities to teleport yourself to, then you unlock 2 more at level 30. At level 40 you unlock the level 20 cities again, but for group teleport. Level 50 unlocks the level 30 levels, but in group teleport.

You will still want a mount though, just to get to dungeons and specific locations that arrent major cities. Check below under the teleports section for more information on the spells.

Hopefully you wont be taking many hits as a mage, cloth & no shield isnt exactly very protective. Especially since you will mainly be focused on getting armor with +int/spr and not armor with high armor rating. But mages do have a few tricks up their sleeve if caught in melee combat. But you better act fast on those tricks!

Here are some things to note when looking through the Mage's abilities. Any attack/spell that's labeled as an Instant, is just that, Instant, and is not affected or does not affect any other combat/casting timers. What this means is, you don't have to stop and cast the spell. You could cast it while running, or meleeing.

Also, as you will see, there is a # of Ranks next to each ability. For example, Fireball has 11 ranks. This means there are11 upgrades that follow from the level you get the ability to level 60. You can see what level you get Rank 1 of an ability by looking at the level under the picture for each ability. I did it this way so you could just skim through what a Mage can do, without having to filter through just basic upgrades. There are other sites out there that have this information. This page is intended to help you choose a race and a class, and fill you in on the capabilities of a Mage.

Interrupting a spell in World of Warcraft just means prolonging the time it takes to cast it by X seconds. Where as stun, will completely stop and abort a spell from being cast and needs to be cast again.

Of course all spells below cost mana. The mana cost & strength for each gets higher with each rank of the spell. Again I chose not to display mana cost details due to simplifying reasons of quickly browsing a mages abilities. Though I did Italic the portion of the spell that grows stronger with each rank. Some spells may list something like 2-3 sec cast time in Italic. This means the spell starts at 2 seconds to cast at rank 1, then grow to 3 with higher ranks.

Spells that can be cast Instantly have their cast time of "Instant" underlined to stress the power of the spell. Instant spells are by far more powerful the spells that take time to cast, so I felt it must be noted when browsing through.

Some abilities are upgradable with talents. There will be something that looks like this: Upgradable: +15% Damage to show what the ability will max out at if upgraded with talents. You will not be able to get all of the upgrades. You earn one talent point a level starting at 10-60. So thats 50 points you can put towards talents, or only about 1.5 talent trees. Use talent calculator websites to determine what you want, talents listed here are for browsing use.

Which Race to Choose...

Both horde and alliance get 2 races that may be mage. Alliance used to have dwarves as mages, but the option to make a dwarf mage was removed via a recent patch. Each race has its advantages and disadvantages to being mage, and each race is a viable choice, you can not gimp yourself by choosing the wrong race. The races were balanced well.
